What South Plains storms do to garage doors

  • Hail: On June 23, 2023, the National Weather Service reported golf ball to baseball size hail across Lubbock, including a 4.5-inch stone at 98th Street and Upland Avenue, and 2.75-inch hail in Wolfforth.
  • Dust storms: The October 17, 2011 haboob brought gusts up to 75 mph and near-zero visibility to Lubbock, damaging structures, signs and fences.
  • Wind: A February 2019 wind event brought a 63 mph peak gust at Lubbock’s airport and destroyed a carport.

Texas also leads the country in hail claims: State Farm alone reported paying about $1.4 billion in Texas hail claims in 2025, more than in any other state.

Why the garage door matters

IBHS research calls the garage door a “damage amplifier.” If wind pushes it in, pressure inside the house can help lift the roof. IBHS cites findings that 90% of homes whose garage door survived the storm had no structural roof damage.

It recommends wind-rated doors and notes that most inland doors lack proper wind-rating labels.

Repair or replace?

What to ask the technician

  • Are the dents cosmetic, or are panels creased and weakened?
  • Can individual panels be replaced, and are matching panels still made?
  • Did the impact bend the tracks or damage the springs or opener?
  • If replacing, what is the new door’s wind rating?
  • Will you provide a written estimate I can send to my insurer?

Questions

Storm damage FAQ

Should I close my garage door before a storm?
Yes. A fully closed, locked door holds up much better against wind than a partly open one.
Do small hail dents need fixing?
Not always for function, but they can affect resale and your insurance claim. Document them with photos right after the storm either way.
