Repair or replace?
When a new door makes sense
- Several panels are dented or creased (hail, a car, or wind)
- The door is old, uninsulated, and the garage bakes in summer
- Repairs keep adding up, especially springs and cables on a heavy wood door
- You want a wind-rated door (see below)
- You’re selling and the door is the first thing buyers see
Wind ratings in West Texas
The International Residential Code (section R609.4) requires garage doors to be tested for wind pressure under ASTM E330 or ANSI/DASMA 108. Lubbock uses the 2021 IRC.
IBHS, the insurance industry’s research institute, recommends wind-rated garage doors and says doors installed before 2006 likely have no wind rating. Ask for the door’s wind-load label and rating when you get quotes.
