Repair or replace?

When a new door makes sense

  • Several panels are dented or creased (hail, a car, or wind)
  • The door is old, uninsulated, and the garage bakes in summer
  • Repairs keep adding up, especially springs and cables on a heavy wood door
  • You want a wind-rated door (see below)
  • You’re selling and the door is the first thing buyers see

Wind ratings in West Texas

The International Residential Code (section R609.4) requires garage doors to be tested for wind pressure under ASTM E330 or ANSI/DASMA 108. Lubbock uses the 2021 IRC.

IBHS, the insurance industry’s research institute, recommends wind-rated garage doors and says doors installed before 2006 likely have no wind rating. Ask for the door’s wind-load label and rating when you get quotes.

Questions

New garage door FAQ

Is an insulated garage door worth it in Lubbock?
If you use the garage as a workshop or gym, or there’s a room above it, insulation helps with summer heat and winter cold. It also tends to make the door quieter and stiffer.
Should I replace the opener at the same time?
If the opener is old or doesn’t have photo-eye safety sensors, it’s often efficient to do both at once. A new, heavier insulated door may also need a stronger opener.
Will insurance pay for a new door after hail?
Sometimes. It depends on your policy and the damage. See hail & wind damage for the Texas Department of Insurance’s tips.
